Job losses as building firm folds

A well-known building contractor in Midlothian, which was founded in 1955, has gone into administration.

ERDC Group Limited operated three divisions including civil engineering, building and sports surfacing.

Blair Nimmo and Gary Fraser of KPMG have been appointed joint administrators.

An official said the administration was a result of the "well-publicised difficulties in the construction sector".

A delay in some large projects and persistent difficulties in obtaining payment from customers were also blamed.

At its peak in 2006, the company operated with about 200 employees but at the time of the joint administrators' appointment employee numbers had reduced to 79.

The company has now ceased trading, with 73 employees made redundant.

Six employees have been retained to assist the joint administrators in realising the company's business and assets.
