A man has died and a woman injured in a suspicious fire in an Edinburgh home.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in a ground-floor flat in Chalmers Crescent, in the Grange area of the city, at 0820 GMT.

A 30-year-old woman is being treated in hospital for smoke inhalation. The street has been cordoned off between Palmerston Road and Grange Road.

Lothian and Borders Police and fire investigators are trying to establish the cause of the blaze.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm that we are investigating the death of a man who died in a suspicious fire that broke out within a property in Chalmers Crescent."

He said their inquiries were at an early stage and appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time the fire broke out to contact them.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the blaze has now been put out.
