Intruder threatens Dalkeith couple in bed

A man has broken into the home of an elderly couple, threatened them with a knife and demanded money.

The couple, both in their 70s, were in bed in their Dalkeith home when the man entered their room at 0130 GMT.

Officers said the man "remonstrated" with the intruder, who is believed to be about 30 years old, then apologised and fled.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for witnesses, especially delivery or taxi drivers, to contact them.

A spokesman for the force said: "While the couple did not suffer any serious injury, they were left understandably shaken, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

"In particular, there may have been delivery drivers or taxi drivers who were in the area at the time, who may have seen someone acting suspiciously, and we would urge them to contact police."

The intruder, who was wearing a blue T-shirt, is described as being 5ft 6in (1.68m) tall with a stocky build and short dark hair.
