A cyclist has been killed following a collision with a council lorry outside an Edinburgh school.

The accident happened near Broughton Primary School in the city centre just before 0800 BST.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said the 32-year-old male cyclist died at the scene.

Lothian and Borders Police have closed off the area around Broughton Road and East Claremont Street while they investigate the incident.

'Tragic incident'

David Lyon, Edinburgh City Council's head of environment, said: "We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the man's family at this very sad time.

"The council is working closely with the police and an immediate, thorough, investigation is currently being carried out into this tragic incident."

Insp Steven Boyle, of Lothian and Borders Police, said the driver of the refuse lorry stopped at the scene and was helping with inquiries.

He said: "We are currently working to establish exactly what happened, so would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.

"It would have been busy at the time, with families dropping children off at school and people heading to work, so it's vital anyone with any information comes forward."
