Reports of shots fired close to the Army's administrative headquarters in Edinburgh are being investigated.

A property on a Hillside Road development, which houses members of the armed forces, was hit by what is thought to be shotgun fire at 0020 BST.

Residents of the house heard loud bangs before discovering damage to the front of the doorway.

No one was injured but Lothian and Borders Police described the incident "as very concerning."

The house is in the few streets that make up married quarters at the entrance of the army base.

Det Sgt Neil Spowart, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "Thankfully no one was injured in this incident, however it is nevertheless very concerning.

"This is a quiet residential area, and we believe that local residents would notice anything untoward or any strangers in the area before or after the incident.

"A team of officers will be conducting inquiries and providing reassurance in the coming days.

"They would be keen to speak to anyone who has any information about the incident and would ask them to come forward immediately."
