Car crash sparks Newton of Falkland gas leak alert

Homes were evacuated in the early hours of the morning after a car crashed into the wall of a Fife house, damaging gas pipes.

A total of 26 people had to leave their homes and go to a local pub after the crash in the village of Newton of Falkland at about 0040 BST.

Those who were evacuated to the village's Malt Bar Inn were allowed to return to their homes at 0500 BST.

A 64-year-old woman has been charged with road traffic offences.

Fife Constabulary said there was a "significant gas leak".

A police spokesman said the car had struck an external gas supply pipe at the house.

"Fife Fire and Rescue Service, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Transco all attended the scene," he said.

"No person was injured as a result of the leak."
