Knife raider targets Mayfield petrol station

Police have appealed for witnesses after a masked man armed with a knife tried to raid a petrol station in Midlothian.

It happened at 2145 BST on Sunday at the Shell garage in Easthouses Road, Mayfield.

A man wearing a balaclava walked into the shop with a knife and tried to take cash from the till. He left empty-handed after failing to open it.

Officers urged anyone with any information to come forward.

A police spokesman said: "Thankfully the member of staff who was in the shop managed to avoid any confrontation with the suspect, who was unsuccessful in his attempt to open the till.

"We want anyone who was in the area of the Shell petrol station around the time of the incident, who noticed the suspect there, to contact us immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises his description, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch."

The suspect was described as white, 5ft 9ins to 6ft tall, and slim to medium build.

He was wearing a three-quarter length olive green military-style overcoat, blue tracksuit bottoms, and white trainers.
