Firefighters rescue six in Haddington blaze

Six people have been rescued after fire broke out in the stairwell of a block of flats in East Lothian.

Firefighters were called to Hardgate Court in Haddington shortly after 02:00, following reports that rubbish in the close was well alight.

The fire was on the second floor of the four-storey building and residents were trapped upstairs.

Four men and two women were brought to safety before the fire was extinguished.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: "One of the men was suffering from smoke inhalation and he was given oxygen at the scene."
