Murder hunt after man dies in East Lothian

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following a disturbance near a pub in East Lothian.

Police found two men, aged 40 and 47, with serious head injuries after being called to an incident near the Clubhouse pub in Musselburgh at about 22:30 on Friday.

Both were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where the 40-year-old later died.

The 47-year-old remained in a serious condition.

Police said they were following a positive line of inquiry.

Det Insp John Peaston, who is leading the investigation for Lothian and Borders Police, said: "At this time we are still trying to determine the full circumstances, which have tragically resulted in one man's death and another man being seriously injured.

"Musselburgh is quite a close-knit community and I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

"The injuries are consistent with an assault and inquiries are continuing."

The 40-year-old man died in the early hours of this morning. A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Sunday.

Det Insp Peaston added: "We believe this is an isolated incident and there is no further risk to the general public.

"Incidents like this are extremely rare both in East Lothian and across the force area."
