Police are appealing for witnesses following an "incredibly frightening" armed robbery at an Edinburgh bookmakers.

A 25-year-old woman was working alone at Ladbrokes on Gorgie Road when a man robbed her at knifepoint of a three-figure sum of money on Monday at 15:00.

Detectives are not linking this to previous robberies at city bookmakers.

The thief is white, 25-30-years-old with short hair and a gaunt and freckled complexion.

He was wearing a light-coloured hat with a dark band, Burberry-type scarf, green jacket, blue jeans and white trainers.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This was an incredibly frightening experience for the store worker, who was alone within the premises at the time of the robbery and we are keen to speak to anyone who can assist us in identifying the man responsible.

"The incident took place in the middle of the afternoon and there would potentially be a number of people in the area around Ladbrokes who may have seen the suspect before or after the robbery.

"Officers are not linking this to previous robberies at city bookmakers but would ask anyone with information that can assist with their enquiries to contact police immediately."
