Edinburgh Council bin services could be privatised
Edinburgh Council is looking at handing over bin collections and street cleaning to a private company.
A report to be considered by councillors next week claims this could help save millions of pounds and provide better services.
This is the first time a Scottish council has developed advanced proposals on outsourcing such work.
Unions are against the proposals and are set to fight to keep the services in-house.
Council officers are recommending that private company, Enterprise Managed Services, run the operation.
It would go into partnership with the authority to provide services including street cleaning and park maintenance, as well as bin collections.
The report to councillors states that there is a compelling business case for the change and that £70m could be saved over seven years.
The authority will debate the privatisation plan and an alternative option of reforming the council's existing operation.
