Man jailed for theft of alcohol in Edinburgh

A man who stole two bottles of alcohol from an Edinburgh supermarket has been jailed for 12 months.

Gary Smith, 29, admitted stealing the alcohol with an unknown female at the Asda store in Sandpiper Drive in July.

He was caught after setting off the store's alarm shortly after 22:00, Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard.

Store detectives also found him carrying scissors which they believed he was going to use to steal clothing from other shops.

Smith, whose address was given Saughton Prison, pleaded guilty to theft and carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
