A man is being held by police in connection with the death of an elderly woman in Edinburgh.

Rosina Sutherland, 74, was found at a sheltered housing complex in Longstone Park at about 14:00 on Sunday.

It is understood that the discovery was made by a member of her family.

Lothian and Borders Police, who are treating the death as suspicious, said a man was detained on Sunday evening. Forensic officers have been examining the scene.

Eric Milligan, a former lord provost of Edinburgh, is also the local Labour councillor for the area.

He said the death of Ms Sutherland was "shocking" for people living in the Longstone area.

He described it as a "very settled" and residential community, adding: "It just goes to show that no-one can never be complacent about crime."

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said: "We are liaising with our colleagues at Lothian and Borders Police regarding this incident and it would be inappropriate to comment further."
