Man impaled on railing in Edinburgh's Atholl Crescent

A 32-year-old man has been taken to hospital after being impaled by the neck on a metal railing in the centre of Edinburgh.

The incident took place at about 23:10 on Thursday on Atholl Crescent.

The man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he was said to be in a serious condition.

Lothian and Borders Police said inquiries were ongoing into how the incident took place. Witnesses are being urged to come forward.
