A man with a stocky build, beer belly and short dark hair is being sought over an alleged rape of a woman at a hotel in Edinburgh.

The incident happened at Rick's Hotel on Frederick Street some time after 02:00 on Sunday.

The 5ft 8in to 6ft tall man spoke with an Eastern European accent and was wearing a dark bomber-type jacket with cream cuffs.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses.

The 39-year-old woman had been out in the city centre with friends when she met a man at the LuLu nightclub on George Street.

'Horrific ordeal'

The pair then took a rickshaw back to the hotel at about 01:45 before heading to the woman's room.

Police said the man sexually assaulted the woman and then left the hotel.

The victim contacted police the following day and detectives are now urging anyone who can assist with their inquiries to come forward.

Det Ch Insp Willie Guild, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "This has been a horrific ordeal for the victim to endure after coming to Edinburgh to enjoy a night out with friends.

"We are eager to hear from anyone who saw the suspect during Saturday evening, or as he made his way to the hotel with the woman in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"Similarly, anyone who saw any suspicious activity in or around the Rick's Hotel after 02:00, or who can help officers identify this man is also asked to contact police immediately."
