CCTV pictures have been released of two men wanted in connection with a serious assault in Edinburgh which left a man with a fractured skull.

The 45-year-old man was attacked as he walked towards Bristo Square from the direction of the underpass at about 02:30 on Saturday 27 August.

Two men had approached him, and one of them punched him to the ground.

The man suffered a fractured skull, cheekbone and jaw as a result of the fall.

Inquiries are ongoing to identify the attackers, and police are keen to talk to two men who are seen on CCTV in the area around the time of the assault.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "As this assault happened at festival time in Edinburgh it is possible the people responsible are not from the city themselves.

"This man suffered significant injuries in what appears to have been an entirely unprovoked assault, and we are appealing for members of the public to come forward and assist with our investigation."
