A gang who robbed and beat a couple with fallen branches in an Edinburgh park are being sought by police.

A group of seven youths wearing baseball caps and tracksuits were involved in the attack at about 01:30 on Saturday in Leith Links.

The couple, who are both in their 20s, were repeatedly struck with branches from fallen tress.

The gang took the man's wallet before hitting the woman again on the head.

The group then made off towards the Links Gardens/Restalrig Road area.

They are described as all being 15 to 16 years old.

Contact police

The woman was taken to the ERI with swelling to her head. Her boyfriend had a cut to his head and bruising, but did not need hospital treatment.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "Thankfully the couple were not seriously injured, however they were still left understandably shaken as a result of what happened, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace those responsible.

"Anyone who was in the area of Leith Links or the surrounding area in the early hours of Saturday morning, who noticed the group of youths there, should contact police.

"Anyone else who has any information that can help us identify the youths should also get in touch."
