Edinburgh City Council computer records hacked

Financial data of people who approached Edinburgh City Council for debt advice may have been compromised after hackers accessed confidential records.

The records contained customers' personal details, although it is not clear what information has been seen.

The council warned that the "malicious cyber attack" could have "potentially damaging consequences".

It urged people who have used the service should check their bank and credit card statements.

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said: "This is a serious crime that could have potentially damaging consequences if individuals' identities are stolen and used.

"We have advised people to be vigilant and to check their bank and credit card statements very carefully for unusual transactions."
