A man may be left scarred for life after he was hit in the face with a bottle during an "unprovoked" attack in Armadale, West Lothian.

The 35-year-old was walking with a group of friends just after midnight on Thursday when he was attacked in South Street, near Bathville Cross.

The attacker then walked off down Station Road with a woman.

The victim was taken to St John's Hospital, where he is still being treated for a cut to his cheek.

Police said the attacker was about 6ft tall, of heavy build, and was wearing a red hooded top.

Officers later said a 28-year-old woman had been charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Livingston Sheriff Court later.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "This was an entirely unprovoked attack which has resulted in a man suffering a serious injury, which may leave a permanent scar.

"We would appeal for anyone with any information to contact us immediately. Likewise, we would be keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the description of the suspect."
