Police are hunting an armed raider who made off with cash after robbing a bookmakers in Edinburgh on New Year's Day.

The man, who was about 30 years old, ordered a member of staff to put money into a black re-usable bag at the shop on Great Junction Street.

The suspect is believed to have been holding a weapon partly hidden under his jacket.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

The robber was described as white, about 6ft tall and of medium build. He had dark hair, dark stubble and was wearing large silver rimmed sunglasses, a blue hooded anorak with grey or brown patches on each shoulder.

He spoke with a local accent and was carrying a black cloth shopping bag with black handles and a white printed design on each side.

A police spokesman said: "This was a frightening experience for the member of staff who was not hurt but was very shaken.

"It is believed the man made off in the direction of Kirkgate and I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch with us.

"The area was cordoned off for a short time while searches were carried out."
