An armed robber who threatened a female shop assistant with a knife in Midlothian before running off with the till is being sought by police.

The robbery happened at about 16:50 on Thursday, at Lothian Grocer in John Street, Penicuik.

He dropped the till outside the shop, however he still managed to make off with the cash tray, which contained a three-figure sum.

He was last seen running into Carnethy Avenue.

The thief is white, in his 20s to 30s, 5ft 3ins to 5ft 8ins tall, of medium build, with dark shoulder length hair, and stubble.

He had a Scottish accent, and wore a dark hoody.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "While she wasn't seriously injured, the female shop assistant was still understandably shaken as a result of what happened, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

"Anyone who was in the area of John Street or Carnethy Road around the time of the robbery, who noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area, should contact police as a matter of urgency.

"Likewise anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch."
