Police are hunting a man who knocked on a door of an East Lothian house and attacked the woman who answered.

The 63-year-old was in her home in Pinkiehill Crescent in Musselburgh at about 19:50 on Sunday when she heard a knock at her door.

When she answered a man appeared and hit her several times on the head and arms with an unknown object.

The woman managed to close the door and the man ran off. She was left slightly injured and shaken.

The attacker was white, in his early 20s, 5ft 5ins tall, of a slim build, with an ashen face and short dark cropped hair.

He was wearing a grey top and dark trousers.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This appears to be a completely random and unprovoked assault, which left the woman badly shaken, though, thankfully, not seriously injured.

"We would urge anyone who was in or around Pinkiehill Crescent on Sunday evening and saw any suspicious activity in the area to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect and can help officers identify him is also asked to get in touch."
