Thomas Riley jailed for string of 'brutal' child attacks

A man convicted of a string of "brutal, sadistic and depraved" rapes, assaults and torture against eight children has been jailed for nine years.

Thomas Riley, 82, threatened to nail one of his victims' hands to a door after "rambling about Jesus".

The High Court in Dumbarton heard Riley's aggressive behaviour was often fuelled by drink.

Jailing him, judge Lord Pentland said he had carried out acts of appalling abuse.

Riley, of Moredun Park Gardens, Edinburgh, was found guilty last month of 12 charges of sexual and physical offences and rapes against children dating back to the mid-1960s.

Ruined childhood

Lord Pentland told the 82-year-old: "This was a prolonged course of violent physical and sexual abuse.

"The evidence of the complainers at the trial made it abundantly clear that you were brutal, sadistic and depraved.

"It is no exaggeration to say that you ruined these children's childhood."

Riley was also placed on the sex offenders register.

Mark Stewart QC, defending, said Riley suffered from serious health problems and was not expected to outlive his sentence.

Mr Stewart said: "It is clear that he is likely to spend the rest of his life in custody."
