Residents re-housed after blaze in Midlothian stairwell

Residents have been re-housed after a suspicious fire which caused £15,000 of damage to a block of flats in Midlothian.

The fire broke out at about 21:00 on Friday, in the stairwell of a block of flats in Chester Square, in the Mayfield area of Dalkeith.

No one was injured as a result of the blaze, however all of the residents were moved due to smoke damage.

The police are urging witnesses to come forward.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This was a deliberate act which could have had serious consequences, and we are appealing for any information that can assist our inquiries.

"Anyone who was in the area of Chester Square around 21:00 on Friday, who noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area, should contact police immediately."
