Leith Pilrig Park sexual assault: Community call for help

Police investigating a "brutal and unprovoked" assault on a woman in Edinburgh are calling on the local community for help.

The 23-year-old victim was found with severe facial injuries within a play area at Pilrig Park at about 06:00 on Sunday.

Detectives believe the attack was sexually motivated.

Police also believe locals within the Pilrig area may hold the key to identifying the attacker.

High visibility patrols are continuing in and around the park and police are stopping members of the community to offer reassurance to the public.

Relevant information

Officers will also visit various community hubs within the area to determine whether anyone has information that is relevant to the investigation.

Insp Kevin McLean, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "While a crime of this nature is exceptionally rare, it undoubtedly has a significant impact upon the community and it is essential that we respond accordingly to address any concerns local residents may have.

"Our engagement with the community is also imperative for obtaining any relevant information for this enquiry.

"We will be speaking with various community groups, businesses, organisations and places of worship to determine whether anyone from the area has seen or heard anything suspicious or believes they can help with our enquiries.

"Anyone who was in or around Pilrig Park in the early hours of Sunday morning and remembers seeing anything suspicious, or who has information that can assist with our investigation is asked to come forward immediately."
