Thief in Midlothian shop robbery bid with 'handgun'

A thief who made an attempted robbery at a Midlothian shop with what appeared to be a handgun is being sought by police.

The incident happened just before 08:00 at the Dalhousie Newsagents in Dalhousie Place, Bonnyrigg.

A 41-year-old man was working alone when the male thief entered the shop.

During a struggle, the shopkeeper was hit in the face. The suspect then ran off from the area empty handed. Police have appealed for witnesses.

The suspect is white and was wearing a faded black top and blue jeans.

Insp Stuart Reid, of Police Scotland, said: "This must have been a terrifying experience for the shopkeeper.

"However, he refused to hand over any money and successfully fended the suspect off.

"Thankfully he did not sustain any serious injury.

"During this time, high-visibility police patrols are being carried out to engage with local residents and offer reassurance to the community.

"Anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity around the shop on Monday morning or who has information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact police immediately."
