Advocate Mark Strachan goes on trial for fraud

An Edinburgh advocate has gone on trial charged with defrauding and attempting to defraud the Scottish Legal Aid Board of more than £54,000.

Mark Strachan, 55, pled not guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to 355 fraud and attempted fraud claims between 9 March 2006 and 16 November 2010.

It is alleged he received £13,394.60 for consultation fees, travel and mileage to which he was not entitled.

He also is alleged to have attempted to obtain £41,472 for similar claims.

The trial before Sheriff Maciver is expected to last several weeks.
