An armed thief who held up a bookmaker with a knife in West Lothian is being sought by police.

The incident happened at about 21:30 on Saturday at the Ladbrokes on West Main Street in Whitburn.

The man entered the bookmakers, which had closed, before brandishing a knife at a 26-year-old female assistant and demanding that she open the safe.

The thief made off with a four-figure sum of cash. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Face covered

The man was described as being white, aged between 20 and 30, 5ft 10ins tall and of slim build.

He was wearing a dark zipper hooded top with light-coloured tassels, light grey jogging bottoms, dark footwear, dark gloves and had his face covered.

Det Sgt Grant Paterson, of Police Scotland, said: "Fortunately, the member of staff was not injured during the robbery, but was left understandably distressed as a result.

"Anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious around the store or in the West Main Street area on Saturday evening is asked to contact police immediately.

"In addition, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect and can help us trace him is also asked to get in touch."
