Thief steals till during knife raid at Edinburgh newsagents

A thief who stole a till while holding up an Edinburgh newsagents at knife-point is being sought by police.

The incident happened at about 15:00 on Sunday at the First News store on Gorgie Road.

A 26-year-old shop assistant was working at the premises when a man with a knife entered.

The thief then stole the till and its contents before making off westwards along Gorgie Road. It is believed he may have gone via the Water of Leith.

A four-figure sum of cash was stolen. Police are appealing for witnesses.

The suspect was described as white, in his late teens, of skinny build with reddish brown hair.

He was wearing a blue hooded top and spoke with a local accent.

Det Insp Stuart Harkness, of Police Scotland, said: "Fortunately the shop assistant was not injured during the incident. However, this was a very frightening experience.

"At the time of the offence there were a number of cyclists in the area who had just completed the Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle and these individuals may have information that can assist with our inquiries.

"If any saw a male acting suspiciously or fitting the description of the suspect they are asked to contact police immediately."
