A man is in hospital after being struck on the face in a serious assault in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, at the weekend.

The incident happened at around 16:15 on Sunday in Drum Street.

The victim suffered a serious facial injury after two men driving a silver Volkswagen Golf approached his car and hit him.

Both suspects got back into their car and drove away. Police are following a positive line of inquiry in relation to the attack.

The victim was driving north in his Audi estate care when he became aware of the Volkswagen driving close behind him.

He pulled in to allow the car to overtake. A short time later, while queuing in traffic outside Javits takeaway, two men got out of the Volkswagen and approached the victim's car.

He also exited his vehicle and the three men had a brief conversation before the victim was struck on the face.

He is being treated at St John's Hospital for his injuries.

Det Con John McShane said: "The victim has suffered a painful injury to his face, which requires medical attention and we are eager to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed this assault take place.

"Similarly, anyone with any further information relevant to this ongoing enquiry is also asked to contact police immediately."
