A 28-year-old man has died after being struck on the M8 motorway on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The man had been travelling in a taxi with two other passengers but got out while it was on the motorway.

Two other cars were involved in the incident at about 06:15, between the Hermiston and Gogar junctions.

The motorway was closed for almost eight hours to allow for investigation work.

Ch Insp Stevie Dolan said: "I'd like to thank the public for their patience while the M8 was closed to allow us to carry out our investigation.

"To help us piece together the circumstances, anyone who witnessed this collision or has information which can assist with our enquiries is urged to contact police on 101."
