Pedestrian hit by car 'critical' in hospital

A pedestrian is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car on an Edinburgh road.

The incident happened at 20:20 on Monday when a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by a 39-year-old woman on Stenhouse Drive, struck a 56-year-old woman.

The woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

She was later transferred to the Western General Hospital.

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours following the incident.

Sgt Alan Stewart, of Police Scotland, said: "Although the driver stopped at the scene, we are appealing for anyone with information or who may have witnessed this incident to contact Police Scotland.

"We are eager to establish exactly what happened and our thoughts are with the female pedestrian's family at what must be a difficult time."
