A 43-year-old man has been robbed and assaulted in the Lochend area of Edinburgh.

The unprovoked attack happened at about 04:00 on Sunday as he was walking along Lochend Road near Burns Street.

Six white men aged between 17 and 18 punched the victim in the face and took his satchel. They then made off in a northerly direction on Lochend Road.

The victim was treated in hospital for facial injuries. Police have appealed for witnesses.

The first attacker, who initially punched the man, was said to have been 5ft 2in tall, of stocky build and with short dark hair. He was wearing a white coloured zip up track suit top and jeans.

Det Con Alison Wyllie, of Police Scotland, said: "The victim was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries during an assault which was completely unprovoked.

"We are looking to trace this group of males who were in the Lochend Road area at about 04:00 on Sunday.

"Anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious is urged to contact Police Scotland."
