The 21-year-old man was walking in Frederick Street towards Queens Street at about 02:10 on Wednesday when he was assaulted.

He was walking behind a group of nine people when one of them attacked him, stole his mobile phone and attempted to take his watch but was disturbed.

The attacker is black, about 20 years old, of medium build and 6ft tall.

He had a local accent and was wearing a dark jacket and blue jeans.

Det Sgt Lynsey Thomson, of Police Scotland, said: "This was an unprovoked assault and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Frederick Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and witnessed this assault or a large group of people in the area at the time."
