A nightclub-goer is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit on the head during an unprovoked attack in Edinburgh.

A man in his 30s had just left Whistlebinkies on North Bridge at about 03:00 when he was assaulted by a bald man.

The attacker then made off along the Royal Mile heading east.

The man is being treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he is serious but stable.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

The attacker is white, 5ft 10ins tall, in his mid 30s, of medium build and has a bald head.

At the time of the attack he wore a light coloured jacket, black t-shirt and jeans.

Det Sgt Paul Greig, who is based at Gayfield police office, said: "This would appear to have been a completely unprovoked attack that unfortunately resulted in an innocent man being seriously assaulted.

"The victim had been enjoying a night out when the suspect approached him and attacked him for no obvious reason."
