Police have appealed for information after a man was repeatedly assaulted in a "violent and sustained" attack while walking along an Edinburgh street.

The assault took place near a garage on Restalrig Road at about 02:00 on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was repeatedly attacked by a man who had been walking behind him.

The victim was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious, but non life-threatening, injuries.

The suspect is described as a white man, in his early 20s, of slim build.

He was wearing dark clothing and white trainers, and was last seen heading north on Restalrig Road.

Det Con Sheila Silvagni, of Police Scotland, said: "This was a violent and sustained attack. We believe that there may have been a number of customers, including taxi drivers, at the garage who witnessed the assault and would appeal for them to get in touch.

"We'd ask anyone who recognises the suspect's description, or saw a man matching this description in the area, to contact us."
