A 12-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Fife.

She was struck by a silver Ford Mondeo travelling northbound on Sandy Brae, Kennoway, at about 19:15 on Thursday.

The girl was taken to Edinburgh's Royal Hospital for Sick Children, where she is being treated for serious head, chest and leg injuries.

The road was closed for several hours for an accident investigation, but has since reopened.

The driver remained at the scene and helped the emergency services with their inquiries.

Sgt Alastair Purvis, of Police Scotland, said: "This collision has resulted in a young girl being taken to hospital with serious injuries and I'm urging anyone who was in the Sandy Brae area and has information that may be able to help our investigation to come forward.

"Likewise anyone who saw the vehicle or witnessed the collision is asked to contact police."
