The boxing promoter Barry Hughes has appeared in court on charges alleging mortgage fraud and making profits from the sale of properties involved.

The 31-year-old was arrested after police raided his home in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, on Wednesday, under a Proceeds of Crime Act warrant.

At Paisley Sheriff Court Mr Hughes made no plea or declaration and was released on bail.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew continued the case for further examination.

Mr Hughes faces a total of five charges all relating to transactions involving former family homes in Renfrewshire at Langbank, Brookfield and Kilmacolm.

It is claimed he committed the offences on various dates between 2001 and 2007 and obtained what amounted to a six-figure sum from the transactions.

It is understood the Crown insisted that his passport be surrendered as a condition of bail.
