Police have said a teenage girl has been left "utterly traumatised" after being dragged down a lane and raped in Glasgow city centre.

The 16-year-old was grabbed by a man in Renfield Street at about 0100 BST and forced into Bath Lane.

The only description available of her attacker is that he was an Asian male.

Police have appealed for anyone in the area at the time to contact them. They said high profile patrols would be made in the city centre area.

Det Insp Fil Capaldi, of Strathclyde Police, said: "The young woman has understandably been left utterly traumatised by this horrific incident. We will use every investigative tool at our disposal to find the person responsible.

"We know that two men came to the aid of the woman and alerted emergency services. I would appeal directly to these two men to come forward as they may hold crucial information which could assist our enquiries.

"These incidents are extremely rare, and I would like to reassure the public, particularly women, that we will maintain high profile patrols within in the city centre area."
