'Unexplained' river death probed

An investigation is under way into the death of a man who apparently fell into a river in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near New Lanark, at about 1945 BST on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old, who has not been named, is believed to have fallen from a considerable height into a shallow part of the river.

The operation to retrieve him involved police, the fire and ambulance service and a Royal Navy rescue helicopter.

Police are treating the man's death as unexplained.
