McColls murder accused found dead in Barlinnie Prison

A man accused of stabbing his wife to death in a Glasgow newsagents has been found dead in prison.

BBC Scotland understands that Sheikh Saine was found hanged in his cell in Barlinnie Prison on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old was due to stand trial for the murder of his wife, Fatou Saine, 33, in the McColl's shop in St Enoch Square on 1 June.

He was remanded in custody after an appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court on 8 June.

The Scottish Prison Service refused to comment.

During his previous court appearance, Mr Saine made no plea or declaration.

He was alleged to have punched and bitten Miss Saine and held his rucksack over her face and mouth before stabbing her.

The court heard that Mr Saine, from Greenock, Inverclyde, was on bail from Greenock Sheriff Court at the time of the incident.

He was also charged with breaching a bail condition not to approach his wife.
