Police probe deliberate fire at empty care home

An unoccupied care home in Coatbridge has been badly damaged in a fire which police say was started deliberately.

The Strathclyde force received reports of the blaze at Ellenvale Nursing Home at 2330 BST on Friday.

The building on Lefroy Street was recently renovated.

Police said three men, wearing dark clothing and possibly balaclavas, were seen running from the site in the direction of Corsewall Street. They appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A joint investigation with Strathclyde Fire and Rescue is now under way.

Det Sgt John Ferguson said: "Inquiries made so far have revealed that this fire was started deliberately and I'd like to speak to anyone with any information which could help us trace those responsible.

"I would therefore urge anyone who may have seen these men either hanging around the local area prior to the fire starting, or anyone who saw a group of men running off afterwards or discarding items of clothing, to get in touch with police as a matter of urgency."
