Pensioner dies in A71 road crash

A woman has died after a crash on the A71 in South Lanarkshire.

The 78-year-old was driving a blue Vauxhall Corsa along Darvel Road, near Strathaven, when her car collided with a silver Mercedes travelling in the opposite direction at about 0810 GMT.

The Mercedes then collided with a Volkswagen Crafter van.

The pensioner died at the scene. The 62-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was treated for minor injuries. The 29-year-old male van driver was uninjured.

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Strathclyde Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
