Man, 87, attacked in East Renfrewshire house robbery

An 87-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being attacked during a robbery in his East Renfrewshire home.

The man and his 69-year-old wife heard a noise upstairs at their home in Divernia Way, Barrhead, at about 2200 GMT on Monday.

When he went upstairs to investigate he was confronted and attacked by a man who was wearing a black hooded top.

The 87-year-old is being treated at Paisley's Royal Alexandria Hospital for a hip injury. His wife was not hurt.

Det Con Gary Gallacher, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the elderly couple who have both been left very upset by this incident which happened in their own home, but thankfully the elderly man is making a speedy recovery.

"I would appeal for anyone who was around Divernia Way, Barrhead, last night and who saw anyone hanging around to get in touch. Residents are best placed to tell us if anyone was out of place.

"This is an isolated incident but I would also like to remind all residents to make sure they keep their doors and windows locked, especially as the dark nights are now upon us."
