Three masked men assaulted and robbed a man of jewellery worth a "substantial amount" outside a property in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, police have said.

The 48-year-old was walking to his car in Penrith Avenue at 0615 GMT when he was attacked by men wearing balaclavas.

They escaped with the jewellery in a dark coloured car driven by a fourth man, which made off into Church Road.

Police said the trio must have known the man was carrying the items and asked any witnesses to come forward.

Det Sgt Phil McLauchlan said: "It is clear that these men have very obviously known that this man had these items in his possession and have targeted him as a result.

"Thankfully the victim only sustained a minor eye injury; however, it could have been must worse.

"It has been an extremely distressing ordeal for him and his family."

Forensic officers have been examining the scene and police said they were trawling local CCTV in a bid to get more information.

The detective added: "I would appeal to any local residents or anyone who was in the area at the time, who may have seen these suspects hanging around prior to the robbery or seen the vehicle parked in Penrith Avenue, to get in touch with us as a matter or urgency."
