A murder inquiry has been launched after a 20-year-old man died in the street following a violent attack outside a pub in South Lanarkshire.

The body of Matthew Martin, from East Kilbride, was found behind the Village Inn pub, in the town's Stuart Street at about 0750 GMT on Monday.

Police said he had been attacked outside the Montgomerie Bar in nearby Montgomery Street the previous night.

They want to trace up to 12 people who may have witnessed the attack.

CCTV images from the area show that about a dozen people were in the vicinity of the Montgomerie Bar at the time of the assault.

Det Sup Alan Buchanan, of Strathclyde Police, said: "We know Matthew was the victim of a violent attack and that a number of people were in the area at the time and would have witnessed the assault and seen his attacker.

"We are currently in the process of tracing these witnesses but I would appeal to anyone who was there to contact us as a matter of urgency. A young man's life has been cut short due to a senseless act of violence.

"I understand that some people may not want to come forward but I want to assure them and the wider community that any information received will be treated confidentially."

An incident room has been set up at East Kilbride police office.
