Megabus sexual assault witness needed for inquiry

Police want to trace a man who may have witnessed a sexual assault on a coach travelling from London to Aberdeen.

The passenger detained a 28-year-old man from Glasgow who was later arrested on suspicion of touching a woman.

The witness is described as white, in his 50s, of stocky build, with grey hair. It is thought he may have been travelling on the coach with his wife.

The coach stopped at Glasgow, Perth and Dundee before reaching Aberdeen early on 1 December 2010.

Police said the Megabus vehicle left Victoria Coach station at 1145 GMT on 30 November.

As the bus passed through Cumbria in the early hours of the morning, a female passenger reported to the driver that she had been sexually assaulted by a male passenger.

When the coach pulled into the Westmorland service station on the M6 motorway, the suspect ran away from the coach.

He was detained by another male passenger until the arrival of police officers.

Anyone who was travelling on this coach or who recognises the description of the witness is asked to contact Det Con Tom Kirkpatrick from Cumbria Constabulary on 0845 3300247.
