One of the west of Scotland's flagship youth hostels, in Oban, has re-opened after a £1.2m refurbishment.

The project aimed to modernise the the facility, while making it more environmentally-friendly, but keeping the building's traditional charm.

It is hoped the re-opening will bring a vital boost to the local economy, and fly the flag for green tourism.

Oban Youth Hostel manager Marie MacColl said sustaining the hostel for the future was vital.

"We are very fortunate to offer the youth hostel experience here in Oban within a beautiful Victorian building, in a stunning waterfront location," she said.

The refurbishment, overseen by SYHA Hostelling Scotland, has seen the installation of a heat recovery system and improved insulation.

There are two new rooms, as well as a new reception, media room self-catering kitchen and a dining area and cafe.

The hostel building's wooden staircase, closed off from view for many years, has been brought back to its former glory, and the stained glass windows have been restored.
