A man killed in a Greenock flat has been officially named by police.

Hugh Porteous, 49, of Sutherland Road, Greenock, was pronounced dead at the scene in Neil Street in the town on Monday.

He is believed to have been stabbed. Strathclyde Police said his relatives had been told about the death.

Two other men, aged 40 and 43, were also injured. They are being treated at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and are both said to be in a stable condition.

Police said a group of three masked men forced their way into the flat at about 23:00 on Monday and attacked them with weapons.

The first was described as in his early 30s, medium build, about 6ft 2ins in height. He was wearing a washed out black jacket, possibly 'G Star' make, straight-legged blue jeans and may have been wearing gloves and a balaclava.

The second man was in his 30s, of heavier build, wearing a black jacket, jeans and white trainers. He may also have been wearing a balaclava.

The third suspect had a khaki camouflage jacket with the hood up.

Police have appealed for witnesses and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
