A man who wore a Darth Vader style helmet while robbing a garage has been jailed for five and a half years.

Francis Anderson, 39, was convicted of robbing the Jet garage in Hurlford Road, Kilmarnock, in November 2010.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how he threatened to shoot staff with an imitation gun and robbed them of £270 before escaping on a bicycle.

He was caught after the Strathclyde force, acting on a tip, searched his home and discovered the helmet.

'Atrocious record'

Throughout his trial Anderson denied carrying out the robbery, which was captured on CCTV.

Jailing Anderson, who has 46 previous convictions, judge Lord Turnbull told him: "You have a quite atrocious record for crimes of dishonesty.

"This latest offence is an escalation of your previous convictions.

"This robbery was carried out on premises where staff carry out a valuable service to the public."
